Thane girls make the record again in Rhythmic Gymnastics!!
Six Thane City Girls, who are students of Phoenix Gymnastics Academy (PGA) and are under the training of
International Gymnast and coach, Ms. Pooja Surve, & Ms. Mansi Surve recently represented India in an
invitational rhythmic gymnastics Competition at the VITRIGO INTERNATIONAL CUP 2018, and won
whooping 15 medals for India.
VITRIGO INTERNATIONAL CUP 2018, was held at National Sports Council , Bukit Kiara, Kuala
Lumpur between 10 th July to 16 th July. There were a total of many gymnasts representing various countries and different states in Malaysia who had participated across
different age groups. Representing India were, Spruha Sahoo, Riya Khilare in Prejunior(U/12) Group,
Kimaya Karle, Anvi Narvekar in U/11 group and Samika Thombare , Aryaa Kadam U/10 age group ably led
by Mrs. Smita Surve. The team was accompanied by Ms. Mansi Surve who is an International Coach and
Judge. Mansi Surve also was on the judging panel for Vitrigo International Cup 2018. All the 6 girls won
medals at this competition and made a history in itself. Kimaya Karle ( 4 medals in Freehand, ball, clubs and
all round) , Anvi Narvekar ( 3 medals in Freehand, clubs, ball), Spruha Sahoo ( 2 medals in ball, clubs ),
Riya Khilare ( 2 medals in ball, clubs), Samika Thombare ( 2 medals in Allround, clubs), Aryaa Kadam ( 2
medals in Allround, Ball). Most of these girls were playing their first International competition and this
success is first step for them as well as for PGA.
Phoenix Gymnastics Academy (PGA) was started in 2012 with just few students now spreading wings with
around 250 gymnasts training under the able guidance of Ms. Pooja Surve and Ms. Mansi Surve, And Mrs.
Smita Surve. Ms. Pooja Surve is FIG Level 1 International coach and Judge and also a prestigious Shree
Shiv Chhatrapati Awardee. She has been appointed as the official broadcaster and Gymnastic technical
expert Star Sports 3 for Rio Olympics 2016. Ms. Mansi Surve is also a FIG recognized International coach
and Judge, and she was with the girls in Vitrigo International Cup 2018, representing India as the Judge.
This is the Third International success of PGA after 2 silver , 1 bronze medals in 2016 Vitrigo International
Cup, and 1 bronze medal in Uzbekistan, making total of 19 International Medals. Four gymnasts of PGA
has also represented India in Asian Gymnastics Championship held in Malaysia in April 2018. One of PGA
gymnast is ranked 3 rd in Khelo India games. PGA gymnasts also won over more than 450 medals
representing Thane district and Maharashtra at various state and national level competitions over the past 6
years. All this is because of the hard-work and dedication by motivator, strategist coach Ms. Pooja & Ms.
Mansi, fondly addressed as ‘Poojatai’ & ‘Mansi tai’ by all their students. To guide & support them are their
parents Mrs. Smita Surve and Mr. Shriniwas Surve who are the backbone of the Academy, and a big
supporter for gymnasts’ parents.
Now, with India giving more importance to Sports; Indian Athletes and Artistic Gymnasts representing India
and winning International medals at prestigious competitions; Rhythmic gymnastics is our next hope in
Indian Olympics Medal Quest. Poojatai & Mansi tai are working dedicatedly on their gymnasts to make the
‘Olympics Medal dream’ come true. Today’s success in Vitrigo International Cup 2018 shows that PGA is
moving in right direction even if we lac the proper practice facilities and lac of funds for international training.
If these girls get the International training in a quality international level training facility, they will certainly give
better results. Little support to PGA and their gymnasts will do wonders for India in Rhythmic Gymnastics a
girl only sport- in near future.
